Each year, the Church gives us the season of Lent as a spiritual journey toward Easter. For forty days, Christians prepare to celebrate the central mystery of our faith: the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This season, inspired by the forty days Christ spent in the desert, invites conversion of heart and a profound renewal of our Christian life.

However, Lent is not simply a set of religious practices. Beyond prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—the three traditional pillars of this season—the Church invites us to experience an inner journey that truly draws us closer to Christ and transforms our lives.

For those of us who are part of the Augustinian Recollect educational mission, this journey takes on an even deeper meaning.

A time to return to the inner self

Saint Augustine left us a spiritual path that runs through all his work: the path to God begins within the human heart. In his writings, he invited us to seek God within ourselves, where Truth dwells. Lent is precisely that time to pause, be silent, and return to that inner space where God speaks to us.

In the midst of a world marked by speed, distractions, and immediacy, this liturgical season reminds us that Christians need spaces for interiority. It is not just about doing more spiritual things, but about learning to listen: to listen to the Word of God, to listen to our own conscience, and to listen to Christ's call in our lives.

Educating the heart: a Lenten mission

In our schools, Lent also becomes a privileged opportunity to educate the hearts of our students.

Educating, from the perspective of Augustinian spirituality and pedagogy, is not simply about transmitting knowledge; it means helping each person discover the truth, cultivate their inner life, and guide their life toward goodness. In this sense, Lent can become a true school of humanity and faith.

For educators, this time can be an invitation to accompany students more deeply: to listen to their concerns, help them discover the value of silence, promote acts of solidarity, and teach them that faith is lived in everyday life.

For students, Lent can be a time to learn something fundamental: that the true greatness of life lies not in immediate success, but in the capacity to love, serve, and seek the truth.

A path that leads to Christ

Ultimately, Lent is a journey that always leads to Christ. All its practices and signs have meaning only if they draw us closer to Him.

Fasting reminds us that God is essential. Prayer opens us to dialogue with God. Almsgiving teaches us to love others concretely. But above all, Lent reminds us that God never stops seeking us. It is a time when the Lord comes to meet us to renew our lives and lead us back to fullness.

As Augustinian Recollect educational communities, we are called to live this time with hope. Every classroom, every encounter, and every educational gesture can become a space where we proclaim Christ and help our students discover the joy of the Gospel.

Because, in the end, Lent is not just a journey of effort: it is a journey of encounter with the One who is Truth and Life.
