On February 17th and 18th, the thirtieth Augustinian Classroom of Education was held at Colegio San Agustín in Madrid, under the motto "Caring for them with care: for a culture of kindness.
The event, organized by the Spanish Augustinian Federation (FAE), was attended by 450 teachers from Augustinian schools in Spain to discuss the prevention of school bullying and the promotion of caring and kind environments.
The session on Saturday, February 17th, began with the participation of clinical psychologist Javier Urra, who gave a talk on "Educating to share life." In it, he reminded attendees that what matters is not the "I" but the "you", that we must be aware that life also has its doses of pain and sadness, and that we should not ask ourselves what others do for us but what we do for others.
Next, lawyer and expert in data protection, social networks, and minors, Laura Davara, gave her presentation on "Social networks in education: a random challenge." In a very graphic way, she compared technology to a car, which is a tool that can be used for both good and evil. She also emphasized the need for collaboration and commitment between educators and families to accompany the impact of the digital world on the lives of minors, which will benefit everyone. She also encouraged teachers to be influencers of children in responsibility and protection.
Lastly, former basketball player Iñaki Zubizarreta shared his testimony and experience of bullying in a talk titled "Breaking the law of silence." During his presentation, he emphasized that, although it is a problem of minors, it is not a minor problem. He also described the situation of bullying as a dagger that pierces the hearts of children, which is precisely what we must help protect because it is the most valuable thing they have.
The session on Sunday, February 18th, began with the Eucharist, presided over by the President of the FAE, Fr. José María Sánchez Martín, and continued with the intervention of psychologist Virginia Cagigal, who explained how to "Promote kindness: listening keys for children and adolescents." During her presentation, she highlighted that there is a new appreciation for kindness and the care of children and adolescents so that they can achieve full development in emotional, social, cognitive, and spiritual areas. She also helped identify the difficulties that may arise and offered different tools to manage them in educational centers.
